2 Questions?? Possibly a Suggestion...

Postby Alice93 » Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:37 pm

Hi,

I'm a very fond user of Files on my iphone and have consequently stored hundreds of different PDF files in thousands of folders!! Only problem is i plan on upgrading my phone, and the last time i changed my phone the Files Url changed and i could no longer access my files, as when i synced the new phone it gave me a different url to log onto the online connection and unfortunately lost a fair amount of work. To prevent this happening again (or to simply back them up and be safe), i was just wondering if there is a way to back up all the folders onto my Laptop Hard Drive from the online connection. I know that you can download individual files, but is there any way you can download the whole file, as some of mine have many folders inside each bigger folder containing many PDF documents.

I know there is a way to do a files to pc back up through the Itunes phone sync up, yet with three of my bigger main folders it seems to encounter some problems and won't back up/save any of them to my hard drive.

I was just wondering whether i am being completely blind, or if not, if there were any thoughts toward being able to back up the folders (or even the whole of the Files app) onto my Hard Drive through the online connection link without having to do each individual item?

...

Also - i don't quite know whether this is to do with Files or my iphone, but since the last time i updated my app, the App suddenly became increasingly slow - for example if i have a main folder list (Fold.1), and in that 10 folders in one file(Fold.2) all filled with PDF items (Fold.3), if i scroll down the main list (Fold.1) and click to enter the first file (Fold.2), thats fine, but if i then go into that file (Fold.3) and scroll down, i then have to got back to the starting screen (Fold.1) and back into the folder (Fold.2) to be able to open the desired PDF documet, otherwise it simply won't let me in the final folder. In other words if i scroll down, it affects opening the document, and i can only access the document if i haven't scrolled down to fine it. Make any sense? I apologise for not being able to properly describe it. Is there some sort of setting i need to change?

Many Thanks

Alice

Alice,

You can download and upload folders if you connect to Files via a WebDAV client (e.g. Windows Explorer or the Mac OS X Finder). See Files built-in help for connection instructions, or see our FAQ and videos:

When you connect using Windows Explorer you can just drag all your files & folders from Files to your PC. Then repeat once you have installed Files on your new device. As you mention the new device will have a new URL, so you'll have to re-create the connection in Windows Explorer to connect to the new instance of Files.

Regarding the performance problems do you have any large images in Folder3? When you scroll down to reveal these images Files will attempt to create thumbnails for the images, this can be a slow (& memory intensive) operation if the images are very large. During thumbnail creation you can't view other images, but it shouldn't affect PDFs (apart from making things slow down a little).
