Four questions on file viewing, file transfer & password

Postby Kari » Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:58 pm

Hi there, I have three questions regarding how files are transferred and how two file types (.rtf and .html) are viewed. I'm interested in purchasing Files but would like to know a few details first.

1 - Does the paid version of Files allow USB transferring of files? I downloaded the lite version but I didn't see this option in iTunes. Also, does it support .zip or .rar files to be transferred?

2 - When viewing .html/.htm files, does Files go online to view the content? I've noticed with other file viewers they go online to view the .html files which I feel pretty much defeats the purpose of saving the files to my iPhone.

3 - Do .rtf files display links correctly? I've noticed with almost every other file viewer, when a link pops up in the text (since the text is copied from the web) the linked words and everything after them are just a blank page.

4 - Does the password/passcode work when launching the app? Also, if your iPhone turns off and the app is still running, when it's turned back on does the password/passcode come back on before people are able to view the file that's been left open? I realise it says in iTunes local and remote files can be password protected but I'm wondering if that only applied to each individual file and not everything at once.

Thank you for taking the time to read over my questions, and answering them if you happen to know the answer. :)

Yes, the full version of Files supports USB File Sharing via iTunes. iOS 4 or later is required for this feature.

Any file can be transferred to Files. However not all file types can be viewed/handled. Zip files are supported (they can be extracted or created in Files), but rar files are not.

2 - When viewing .html/.htm files, does Files go online to view the content? I've noticed with other file viewers they go online to view the .html files which I feel pretty much defeats the purpose of saving the files to my iPhone.

No, Files will read the content from the iPhone, it won't go online (unless any links in the static HTML files reference online content).

3 - Do .rtf files display links correctly? I've noticed with almost every other file viewer, when a link pops up in the text (since the text is copied from the web) the linked words and everything after them are just a blank page.

Links are automatically highlighted in RTF documents.

4 - Does the password/passcode work when launching the app? Also, if your iPhone turns off and the app is still running, when it's turned back on does the password/passcode come back on before people are able to view the file that's been left open? Currently the passcode lock is application wide. The passcode screen is displayed when Files starts and also (optionally) when the device wakes from sleep. In both cases content/documents are obscured completely and the user never sees anything other than the passcode screen.
