any plans to encrypt content in Files?

Postby colonels » Tue Jul 27, 2010 3:05 am

iphone ios4 supports hardware encryption, but it is currently limited to email and contact info

any plans to utilize this hardware encryption on files? or perhaps software encryption?

reason i ask is because when the iphone 4 ios4 erases content it does so by removing the encryption key that only applies to mail and contacts, the rest of the phone "content" which includes files documents are not overwritten or erased securely since they were never encrypted to begin with.

Thanks for the feedback.

We've been thinking about adding support for hardware encryption to Files as it would provide extra security for users. The main reason it's not available yet is that the implementation details are not trivial. For example if you decide to switch on encryption for your existing documents all of this data has to be re-written to the iPhone's disk in an encrypted format. This could a) take a long time and b) may be interrupted if the application is closed (which we'd need to handle cleanly). For these reasons and others it's not going to be a quick feature to add, but it is on our road map and we hope to provide support for encryption as soon as we have time to implement the feature.
